Birth Days by John Grey

These women

are in various stages

of giving birth.

A few on watch.

Two already in the operating theater.

Some back in their beds,

smiling and healing.

Who will sweep out the child like dirt,

who will smother it with love?

No indication

from the round bellies sitting upright,

the cramping, pushing, splitting blood,

the deflated shells

flapped over the heart

Babies kick and scream,

giggle and sleep.

The reasons why they do this

will come later.
