where then the whip by Nick Cooke

dedicated to the groucho club

..

where then the whip

………….if not under cellophane wrap

the ringmaster’s gift

……………………an orchid a serpent

..

…….its antique power encased

in a lash of skin or air

………….as the masters of the craft

drive beasts from their burdensome cages

..

but the circus passed by here long ago

………………..the winding row of vans

………………………..that you tried to jump

and remain unseen

..

………..you should have been more garish

got yourself brazenly up

………………in costume fit for mockery

..or insinuation

..

so say those that know

……..the gleam-eyed monsters

…………..who hide the whip

…………………in their own outsized trousers

..

…………………the cossacks of the age

……………the balancing act supreme

……..on a tightrope of their own making

their hides tough as rhino

..
